Man charged with DUI, hit-and-run in two-car accident

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A man is facing multiple charges including DUI after fleeing the scene of a crash that injured multiple people in Jackson County. 

Romeo Diaz, 39, of Sneads, Fla., was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol on April 28. 

According to FHP, around 9:52 a.m. on Saturday, Diaz was traveling eastbound on Satellite Road approaching the intersection of State Road 77. 

The other vehicle was travelling southbound on State Road 77.  

FHP says, when the other vehicle began to make a left turn, Diaz crashed into the side of the car. 

Diaz and one of his passengers, Jose Godinez, fled the scene on foot.  

FHP states K-9 teams were called to the scene to track Diaz and they tracked him for several hours, covering over five miles through woods, swamps, ponds, and fields. 

According to FHP, K-9 teams tracked Diaz from Jackson County into Washington County, before tracking him back to Jackson.  

Diaz was found by FHP on Vicki Road in Jackson County and arrested. 

FHP says, the four people in the other car either suffered minor or serious injuries and were taken to either Southeast Alabama Medical Center or Chipley Hospital.  

The other two passengers in Diaz's car suffered minor or serious injuries. 

FHP states that everyone in Diaz's car had alcohol in their system and were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.  

Diaz is being charged with violation of right of way, DUI with serious bodily injury to another, aggravated fleeing with serious injury or death, leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury without rendering aid, resisting arrest without violence, no valid driver's license, and an open warrant for fail to appear.
