TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- A man is behind bars after attacking a Leon County deputy.

According to the Leon County Sheriff's Office, it happened just before 5:30 Sunday morning. Deputies were called to the 1400 block of Katie Lois Road off Blountstown Highway for some sort of disturbance. When the deputy arrived, the deputy found 27-year-old Shane Maxwell with a gun. Maxwell attacked the deputy, hitting him multiple times in the face and head. The deputy called for back up and when a second deputy arrived, Maxwell tried to run over the deputy with a car. The deputy fired one shot at the car as Maxwell drove away, eventually leaving the car and running into the Apalachicola National Forest. The Leon County Sheriff's Office used K9 units along with help from the Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Wildlife Commission, Wakulla Correctional Institute and Liberty Correctional Institute to find Maxwell.

The deputy who was attacked was injured in the face, but has been released from the hospital. The deputy who fired at Maxwell's car has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Maxwell is charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence and battery.
