TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - In November of 2015 WTXL News examined the difference between flying out of Tallahassee, compared to flying from another airport in the region. Part of the issue, finding ways to attract more airlines to the airport and getting locals to spend their money leaving from Tallahassee.

For years the Tallahassee business community has said air-travel is a major factor when it comes to expanding business and recruiting quality companies and jobs to the Tallahassee market. Although changes are taking place at the Tallahassee International Airport to accommodate consumers, it's still pricey to get out of town for fun.

Jay Revell, Vice President of the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce says, "I think people think in their head, am I willing to pay for the convenience of flying out of my home town?"

In some cases people opt to fly out of Jacksonville, Orlando, and Panama City to get cheaper tickets, which can be substantial, sometimes a difference of $100 to $300 dollars. As the area continues to grow so does the demand for more flights to more destinations at a cheaper rate.

INSIDERS UPDATE

The airline industry is a $717-billion business, being competitive on price is key. Chris Curry, Director of the Tallahassee International Airport recognizes that and is working to make updates to attract more customers but businesses to the airport.

One of the upgrades includes a $6-million In-Line Baggage Handling System that will make traveling through the airport faster, safer and more convenient. The system integrates a new Explosive Detection System. It also facilitates a more timely and efficient baggage security screening, reducing passenger congestion in the ticket lobby.

The airport has several concession improvements including the Live Oak Grille and Monroe Street Beer and Wine. As passenger wait for their flights, new seating has been installed offering more comfortable seats with charging stations available.

Understanding consumers have choices when it comes to air travel, Curry is making the necessary improvements to attract more revenue for the airport.

The most dramatic visible changes coming to the Tallahassee International Airport is new Terrazzo flooring. The new floor is comprised of recycled stained glass, mother of pearl, and bits of mirror, all designed to reflect sunlight and shimmer beneath the surface.
