TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Severe weather is no joking matter. And when it comes to colleges and universities there are a lot of people and moving parts.

With the threat of severe weather, local colleges are taking precautions to make sure that their students and faculty are prepared.

Tallahassee Community College, Florida State University, and Florida A&M University all have an alert system designed to notify folks when severe weather is approaching.

These alert systems can provide text messages, twitter updates, and email to the students and faculty.

At Tallahassee Community College, the system has only been around for one year but dean of student services Michael Coleman says the feedback is positive.

Faculty are always encouraging students to sign up for the free alert system so they can be weather prepared.

Alert messages regarding severe weather can also be found on the colleges' respective Facebook pages. And remember, it's always important to make sure you are weather aware and weather ready.
