TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - HGTV’s Flip or Flop stars Tarek and Christina El Moussa announced they're separating, this coming just months after facing a backlash from some students of their real estate seminars, including one in Havana Florida who said the classes were misleading.

On Monday, the El Moussa's revealed the news to People Magazine, saying that they were evaluating how to handle moving forward but have ultimately decided to separate for the time being.

Several incidents could have led up to the announcement including an alleged altercation at their home.

According to TMZ, police responded to the couple’s Orange County home in May after receiving a “call of a possibly suicidal male with a gun.”

In the statement to People, the El Moussa's said, "We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed.”

Following that incident, the couple went through another peroid

Back in October, former Havana Florida student Doug Stephens, told ABC News that he attended one of the couple's seminars in the state after seeing an online advertisement featuring their photo.

But he said when he attended the class, the couple were nowhere to be seen.

He said on ABC's Good Morning America, that El Moussa's were not at any of the sessions, and that he was "aggressively pushed" to continue purchasing classes, spending nearly $3,000.

But, Christina El Moussa told ABC News that she and Tarek are proud of their program.

"I stand by our product," she said. "It's our tools, it's our system. It's what Tarek and I do. I've only heard very minimal complaints."

ABC News found more than 150 complaints online about the El Moussas' program with the BBB of St. Louis. But Zurixx said statistically, 150 complaints out from more than 374,000 students, is extremely low.
