GADSDEN CO., Fla. (WTXL) - Judge Jonathan Siostrom sentenced Elijah Brookins, 34, to death on Thursday, Jan. 23.

According to Jan Whatley, a spokesperson for the State Attorney's Office, Brookins was given the death penalty in the brutal killing of a Department of Corrections inmate which occured on a DOC transport bus in September of 2011.

On December 11, 2013, a jury convicted Brookins of first degree murder in the stabbing death of Eric Sexton, 34. The same jury recommended a death sentence by a vote of 10 to 2.

Whatley says evidence in the case showed that Sexton was stabbed more than 20 times with a homemade prison shank in his eyes, face, back, stomach and anus. Assistant State Attorney Frank Allman, the prosecuting attorney, stated that Robbery appeared to be the motive for the attack.
