TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Florida State University is making sure some of its buildings are better prepared in case a hurricane hits the campus.

The university installed shutters over windows on five buildings around campus, including the Turnbull Conference Center.

If a hurricane were to hit campus, the university says these buildings could house more than 6,200 people.

Emergency Management director David Bujak says they were built to withstand severe weather, but there's still one main concern.

"Our Achilles' heel is the glass," he said. "If the glass breaks, wind gets in, the rain gets in. flying debris and glass could become an issue. So, our key thing in any severe weather -- or even tropical storms or hurricanes -- is just simply get people away from the glass."

FSU'S Emergency Management Department says the university has spent $1.6 million on hurricane preparedness through state and federal funds.
