FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says they will begin arresting people who are illegally dumping items at recycling sites.

Sheriff A.J. 'Tony' Smith warned that after Friday, if you are caught dumping illegal items, you will be arrested. The sheriff took to social media Friday morning to show the growing trash problem at the recycle site on St. George Island:

FCSO has set up cameras in a recycling area and have already caught around 10 to 15 people illegally dumping on camera. Those people will not face criminal charges, however, the sheriff says any one caught from this point on will be arrested on a warrant for illegal dumping.

Sheriff Smith stresses that residents should follow the signs and dump what only what is allowed, or face the consequences.

He says the sheriff's office, along with other law enforcement agencies, will continue monitoring several areas, including Lanark and Apalachicola.

"Franklin County is a beautiful county," Sheriff Smith said. "We want to keep it clean, particularly in places where we're trying to recycle."

If you spot illegal dumping in any other Franklin County, you are asked to call the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 850-670-8500.
