JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Jacksonville woman accused of driving around railroad crossing arms and causing a fatal crash faces manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that 23-year-old Michelle A. Hopkins was arrested Tuesday.
Authorities say Hopkins and her passenger, 23-year-old Abdul Miller Jr., were leaving a Publix warehouse June 27 when they came to a railroad crossing. Police say surveillance video shows their car attempting to cross without stopping, despite crossing arms with lights and bells in operation.
The Florida Times-Union (http://goo.gl/2HTsxy ) reports the car was torn to pieces by a westbound train. Miller died at the scene, and Hopkins was hospitalized.
Hopkins was released Thursday on $100,000 bail. Jail records didn't list an attorney.
