TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A bill that would make changes to Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law is advancing in the state legislature.
A Florida Senate committee on Monday unanimously approved a bill that would alter the law, despite the law's historic tendency to split votes along party lines.
Proposed changes within the bill include allowing local law enforcement agencies to set their own guidelines for neighborhood watch organizations, clarifying the legal definition of immunity under Stand Your Ground, and allowing law enforcement to investigate even when the law is invoked.
The bill is co-sponsored by Sen. David Simmons, Republican of Altamonte Springs, and Sen. Christpher Smith, Democrat of Fort Lauderdale. The bill has also gained the support of the National Rifle Association.
The legislation must advance through two more committees before being considered in a full floor vote.
