Tallahassee, FL (WTXL) -- A 26-year-old man who was putting gas into a vehicle parked in the shoulder of I-10 was struck by the overhanging roof of a tractor-trailer and killed.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Chevy Trailblazer was parked eastbound in the outside emergency lane of Interstate-10 when a Good Samaritan stopped to help.

Troopers say the Good Samaritan was driving a Nissan Frontier and parked behind the Trailblazer to help the occupants of the vehicle.

While Earnest Lee Thomas, Jr. was putting gas into the Trailblazer, the tractor drove past with cargo hanging off the right side and "the overhanging roof trusses" hit the back of the Frontier, collided into Thomas and then the rear of the Trailblazer, according to investigators.

The accident report states the tractor, driven by Timothy Chancy, drove off and left the scene.

Florida Highway Patrol says there was a two year old in the Frontier.
