MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) - As Hurricane Michael recovery efforts continue in the Panhandle, FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance teams are going door to door in 12 Florida counties.

They're helping survivors register for assistance, address needs, and make referrals to other volunteer groups.

So far, they've met with more than 9,200 survivors and helped more than 3,200 register for disaster aid.

"One of the big things I like to tell people is that FEMA is one piece of the puzzle," said Nikki Gaskins with FEMA. "We are working here closely with the state, the local, and the non-profits to help people get back on the road to recovery."

The deadline to register for disaster assistance is December 10.

You should file with your own insurance first before applying for disaster aid with FEMA.

You can still register for aid, even if a DSA member does not come to your door.
