TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -   Florida A&M University is marking the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act with a year long celebration.

The university's observance of the anniversary begins on January 31 at noon, with a special centennial event held in FAMU's Perry Page Auditorium on 1740 S. Martin Luther King Boulevard.

FAMU alumnus Chester Gipson, Ph.D will serve as the event's honorary chairperson.  Gipson serves as a deputy administrator of animal care for the USDA's Health Inspection Service.

The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 established the National Cooperative Extension System, allowing FAMU and other land-grant institutions to extend their reach into underserved communities through research and technical assistance.

FAMU's Extension Program is an arm of the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, and works in cooperation with the Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences.

Members of the public may RSVP for the kick-off celebration on or before Jan. 30 by calling, (850) 599-3546 or emailing, extension@famu.edu. For more information, visit, www.famu/cep.
