TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida A&M University now has a special way to remember one of its veterans.

A historical marker at the FAMU Village student housing complex was created for Lieutenant James Polkinghorne.

The Purple Heart recipient, was entering his senior year at FAMU when he enlisted in the military.

Lieutenant Polkinghorne was the first Rattler accepted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and the first from FAMU to become a Tuskeegee Airman.

He was the flight leader of a squadron of fighter planes when he was shot down in 1944 at 23-years-old.
