TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints from residents who have gotten calls from IRS scammers.

The scam involves the caller saying you owe money to the Internal Revenue Service and can clear it up with gift cards or prepaid credit cards.

LCSO says it’s important to remember no legitimate government agency will request you pay money over the phone.

If you receive one of these calls DO NOT pay any money. Instead, hang up and call the IRS directly.

Deputies ask that you check with any elderly family members to be sure they haven’t been contacted.

If you’d like to report an issue, call the IRS Inspector General’s Office directly at 800- 366-4484 or you can call the Sheriff’s Office at 850-606-3300
