TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - More than half of veterans struggle to find work in their desired field after leaving the military according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Veteran unemployment hit a record low in 2017. CareerSource Capital Region is offering their 6th annual Paychecks for Patriots event and they hope to add even more veterans to Florida's workforce.

"It's a wonderful program for veterans to look into a try to be a part of," said veteran Willie Earlbanks.

Paychecks for Patriots is connecting hundreds of people with these 40 employers who are looking to hire veterans. After finding a job that works for you, you fill out an application and leave here with one interview, or even several.

It's all part of a statewide initiative in honor of November as hire a vet month. Organizers say there are 26 other job fairs happening in Florida this month.

"Events like these really change the lives of the individuals that are in our community, especially veterans. Knowing employers  care that much to be here to spend the first half of their day interviewing them and providing them with employment opportunities," said Kara Smith, Senior Director of CareerSource Capital Region.

Organizers estimate there were nearly 200 people at Thursday's job fair.
