MIDWAY, Fl. (WTXL) -- The City of Midway wants to make the intersections near the Blue Star Highway (U.S. Highway 90) Pilot and Flying J gas stations safer. They are the only two traffic light intersections in Midway, and now they have new additions: Red light cameras facing both east and west on the roadway.

With nearby cities like Tallahassee getting rid of red light cameras, the City of Midway's decision drives in the opposite direction.

City Manager Auburn Ford says the main concern is added safety to these very busy areas right off of Interstate 10. According to Ford, the cameras operate under "Sensys America" at a flat fee of $4000 a month. Ford says that the cameras wouldn't cost "a red cent" for Midway.

"Anything under that [$4000], they [Sensys America] absorb the cost", said Ford, "Anything over that, the city gains in revenue for those traffic violations."

According to Ford, the additional revenue that can be acquired would go straight to the city police department for man power and equipment. The cameras wont take part in issuing traffic tickets until August 15th, but the city will use them through late July and early August as an early warning of their implementation.

"We're gonna take a 30 day trial, and we're going to send out warning notices to anyone that has a violation", said Ford, "And after that 30 day trail, I think August 15th, they'll go into full effect. If you get caught violating traffic laws at these two intersections, you will receive a ticket in the mail."

After August 15th, if you do receive a ticket through the mail from these cameras, any appeal process would be done through the Midway City Hall.
