Bainbridge, Ga. (WXTL) - Jessica Richardson is making history, becoming the first fully certified female officer at the Bainbridge Public Safety Department in over 20 years.

The officers at the Bainbridge Public Safety Department are not only trained as police officers, but they're trained as firefighters as well. They go through 2 months at the fire academy and almost 3 months at the police academy before they're able to go out in the field.

Richardson says hopes she can motivate others. She has this advice to offer, "don't let any obstacles get in your way. I had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get where I am. One thing my mom always taught me to never give up on anything."

Richardson is paving the way for other female officers to join the force like Davina Evans.

Evans has already begun the process. "I just graduated from fire academy with 8 weeks of training, going through the maze, and  climbing ladders. It was tough, but I made it through," Evans said.

Evans says she believes it's important for women to be represented in law enforcement, "It gives me an opportunity to show excellence for woman and also raise the profile for women in law enforcement."
