BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) — There are going to be new cameras in the Bainbridge Public Safety cars.
The old cameras didn't always work, creating a lack of evidence in some cases. These new cameras come with a unique point of view.
It's not a new concept to have cameras inside police vehicles, but for Bainbridge Public Safety, they are adding new cameras to both the front and backseats of their police fleet.
Both cameras will record audio and video, though the backseat camera uses infrared technology to create a black-and-white image.
Officers can activate the cameras manually, but they will also start recording when the car's emergency lights turn on.
These cameras also communicate with officers' body cameras. When the car cameras begin recording, the body cameras will do the same.
Frank Green, the Deputy Director of Bainbridge Public Safety, said that these new cameras will help not only train officers, but provide more evidence than a body camera or officer alone can give.
"The camera, it brings about good evidence. It actually sees more than what people see because it has a wider angle and generally people are focused on one person or one event," said Green. "They're not seeing everything else that the camera is seeing."
The video recorded on these cameras can be viewed almost immediately after the recording ends.
The cameras are also connected to the in car laptop and officers will be able see if the cameras are working and what they are recording before getting on the road.
