TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The annual Run For Lawson 5K and 10K race is happening on Saturday.

It benefits the Lawson Mayfield Memorial Foundation. Lawson Mayfield graduated from Maclay in 2009 and had just gotten back from a two-week trip to Germany when she died suddenly in September of bacterial meningitis.

Her mother, Cathy, says that day Lawson had been riding horses as usual, but complained of a headache.

Later that night, when she felt worse, Cathy took her to the hospital but she died two days later.

She says at the time, Lawson had not gotten the vaccine for meningitis, because then, it wasn't required, but wished she had and is now making it her mission to raise awareness.

"Lawson died of bacterial meningitis, and we want to raise awareness about the disease, about its symptoms, about its causes, and about prevention," said Cathy.

That race will happen Saturday morning. It's at the athletic fields of Holy Comforter Episcopal School and the Miccosukkee Greenways.

If you want to run, you can register Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the race.
