TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- There's one sure-fire way to make sure your Kentucky Derby party has plenty of "spirit" -- mint juleps, of course!

The mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. During Derby weekend, more than 120,000 mint juleps are sold at Churchhill Downs, and that demand requires about 1,000 pounds of fresh mint.

For this What's To Eat, we headed to the Level 8 Lounge, where mixologist Kevin Emmanuel showed us the perfect way to make this Southern staple.

Check out the video to hear about the history of this cocktail, and Kevin's tips for making sure you get the smoothest sip.

You'll need:

- Silver or pewter cup (allows frost to form on the outside)

- Crushed ice

- Several sprigs of mint

- Simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)

- Bourbon  (Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby)

Also make sure to drink your julep with a straw! It'll go straight to the bottom of the drink and the pull all the flavors up to you.

Level 8 Lounge is a rooftop lounge on the top of Hotel Duval in Downtown Tallahassee. For more information, click here.

Remember to catch What's To Eat every Friday morning on WTXL Sunrise.
