WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) -- With a few short weeks left of summer, fall will be here before you know it... so enjoy summer fruits, before the season ends.

When you're buying fruits, you want to think about color; eat the rainbow!  Buy as many colors as possible and that way you know you're getting all the nutrients you need from your fruit.

For example, not only are cherries low in calories and high in fiber, they contain antioxidants that help fight cancer and heart disease.  They also may have weight control properties, according to recent research.

Watermelon lovers, rejoice. This fruit is abundant this time of year. Watermelon is ninety-two percent water, meaning it helps you eat less and feel more satisfied at meals.

Also, juicy stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and plums contain compounds that may fight metabolic syndrome.  that's a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. plus, the same compounds may also hold potential for combating breast cancer.
