LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 87th annual Academy Awards was a night bristled with politics and heartfelt speeches about women's rights, immigration, suicide prevention and race.

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who won best director for "Birdman," said he prays that immigrants to the U.S. "can be treated with the same dignity and the respect of the ones who came before and (built) this incredible immigrant nation."

And best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette pushed for wage equality during her acceptance speech.

"Birdman" has won best picture at this year's Academy Awards. The film is a comedy about an actor fleeing his superhero past.

Eddie Redmayne was awarded best actor for "The Theory of Everything" and Julianne Moore won best actress for "Still Alice."
