SNEADS, FL (WTXL) - An officer is on administrative leave after he fatally shot a woman who allegedly came at him with a knife.

According to the Sneads Police Department, the incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday after police were called to a physical disturbance at 7957 Old Spanish Trail.

When the officer arrived on scene, he reported hearing screaming from inside. Shortly thereafter, the officer told dispatchers that a woman inside the residence was coming at him with a knife and requested backup.

Moments later, the officer radioed in that shots had been fired and requested an ambulance, police said.

When Chief Burt McAlpin arrived on scene, he said he pronounced the woman dead from gunshot wounds.

The officer's gun was taken as evidence and the officer was placed on paid administrative leave and taken to his residence, police said. They noted this is standard procedure.

FDLE is assisting in the investigation. The names of the officer and victim have not yet been released.
