After weakening into a general disturbance, Ophelia is rebounding and has turned into the season's third major hurricane.
Late Friday, Ophelia is a category 3 hurricane with highest sustained winds of 120 mph and was moving north-northwest at 12 mph. The system is about 600 miles south-southeast of Bermuda.
Upper-level winds have decreased in speed in vicinity of the system, which helped Ophelia rapidly intensify and organize. It's expected to remain a hurricane during the first half of the weekend as it travels north into the west-central Atlantic. Once it encounters the colder waters in the northern latitudes of the Atlantic, it will transition into a post-tropical storm system.
Though the system may move close to Bermuda, it is not going to be a major factor in the United States.
