TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Students and alumni of Florida A&M University are expected to celebrate the university’s 125th anniversary with a nationwide prayer Saturday.
We’re told the event is being put on by the FAMU Student National Alumni Association with the help of the Student Government Association.
Locally, FAMU supporters will gather around the campus’ Eternal Flame. Organizers say in the Miami-Dade area, alumni will gather at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami gardens where they will also take part in prayer at 2 p.m.
We’re told there will be music and speakers at both locations.
Alumni around the nation are also expected to pray at the same time.
"We picked the Eternal Flame (to meet at) because it represents the longevity of the university," said Ashleigh Irving, a political science major at FAMU. "That's what we're trying to promote."
The event is apart of an initiative called “FAMUnited We Stand: National FAMU Day of Prayer.”
Irving says the prayer is an effort to bring unity to the campus and is not in response to the November hazing-related death of marching 100 drum major Robert Champion, 26.
"With all the negative publicity the university has received over the past few months, it's important for us to go before God in an attempt to unify Rattlers," said DeAnthony Friday, membership chair of the SNAA Miami-Dade chapter.
