TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Volunteers and workers with the Second Harvest of the Big Bend worked to gather crops Saturday that would otherwise go to waste.

The group rounded up crops at the “Lott’s Community Garden,” east of Tallahassee, to be used to feed hungry families throughout the Big Bend area.

For about three hours, more than 50 volunteers picked turnips, mustard and collard greens. Organizers with Second Harvest tell us the event will support more than 350 children who participate in the “Backpack for Kids” program.

The program provides hungry children who have no food during the weekend with a bag of food.

Organizers say in 2011, they were able to distribute more than 810,000 pounds of fresh produce to residents struggling with hunger.
