Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)-- Leon County Commissioners are once again considering the idea of increasing the gas sales tax. Commissioners recently began exploring a the possible increase. The five cent gas tax proposal has been put on the back burner in recent years.
Money generated from the tax will go towards the Transportation Fund, used to maintain roads and sidewalks. In recent years, Commissioners have used funds from General Revenue for this up-keep. Commissioners have been reluctant to raise gas or property taxes.
Commissioner Kristin Dozier says the county has cut programs and services to balance out the budget, but as they plan for the future, a gas tax is inevitable. She supports gradually increasing the gas sales tax, one penny or so a year. A family with two vehicles would be paying up to $50 dollars more for gas a year with the five cent tax increase.
Commissioners will need a five to seven vote approval if it is passes. Dozier says in her opinion it's unlikely the tax will be passed this year. Commissioners are also considering increasing the cost residents pay for sewer and solid waste services.
