TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In a hearing that lasted all but two minutes, members of the Florida Commission on Ethics dismissed a complaint Friday that was filed against Tallahassee Mayor John Marks.
The complaint alleged that Mayor Marks hired an individual to help on his reelection campaign. The complaint says that individual also worked for a firm that was a contractor for the City of Tallahassee.
Ron Meyer, the attorney representing Mayor John Marks, says the Commission found no wrong doing and says the individual Mayor Marks hired never received any direct funding from the City.
"People just file these frivolous complaints, it doesn't cost anything to make a complaint, you don't even have to have facts to support it," Meyer said. "You make the complaint, you run off to the news media to publicize the fact the complaint has been made and it takes weeks sometimes months for the commission to ultimately to get to the bottom and conclude the complaint is frivolous. This is is just another example of the behavior."
But this likely won't be the last time Meyer goes before the Florida Commission on Ethics on behalf of the mayor.
Erwin Jackson is a long time critic of the mayor and has filed several ethic complaints against the mayor for various doings.
Jackson says he expected to the Commission to take up his filed complaints later this year.
Meyer says they'll continue to defend the Mayor.
"There's no proof and no fact and that's a destructive way of trying to make whatever political point they're trying to make," Meyer said. "if they keep filing we'll keep defending and we'll keep winning."
