TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Abortion rights advocates say lawmakers are waging an all out attack on women's rights at the Florida Capitol.

They protested Tuesday several new measures being considered to restrict abortions in the state.

“We are in the midst of one of the most devastating legislative assaults on women's healthcare,” said Staci Fox, CEO of Planned Parenthood in North Florida.

Members and supporters of Planned Parenthood are demanding lawmakers stop, what they say is an attack on abortion rights.

“It's unconscionable to put governmental restrictions on a woman's body and a woman's choice,” said Alexa Nelen, a University of Central Florida student.

Last year, lawmakers approved four bills to restrict abortions in the state.

This year, they're considering several more pieces of legislation.

Republican Representative Charles Van Zant is sponsoring an all-out ban on abortions in Florida. But his measure has yet to gain traction at the Capitol

“Abortions are inhumane,” said Rep. Van Zant, “it is the most severe encroachment on civil rights that could ever be placed on another human being."

Rep. Van Zant says he supports other measures being considered. That includes prohibiting abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, requiring only doctors to own new abortion clinics and banning selective abortions based on sex or race of the fetus.

Planned Parenthood, itself has been under attack for its support of women's reproductive rights.

"The actual things that the do toward unborn children and the destruction of their lives speaks for itself," said Van Zant.

“When I had no one else, Planned Parenthood was there, giving me resources, giving me information,” said Nelen, “not judging me and not turning me away.”

Lawmakers will take up a multi-purpose, anti-abortion bill Wednesday in a Senate committee.
