TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Senate panel has cleared a bill that
aims to streamline and speed up the state's foreclosure process.
But critics say a speeded-up process will infringe on homeowners'
rights.
The Senate Judiciary Committee cleared the bill (SB 1890) by a
vote of 5-2 party line vote on Monday.
Sen. Jack Latvala's proposal would increase requirements that a
party trying to foreclose on a property actually owns the mortgage.
But the Clearwater Republican's bill also allows condominium and
homeowner associations who are owed dues to force a home into
foreclosure.
Consumer advocates and foreclosed homeowners say the bill isn't
needed. They place blame on banks and lawyers trying to game the
system with questionable paperwork.
