TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
- Police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting at a Tallahassee Checkers shooting that injured a 3-year-old child.

According to the victim's mother, she and a group including the 3 year old; her sisters, Valencia Williams and Ashley Hunter; her brother, Bernard Hunter and her sister's boyfriend, Darnell Lambert, got into a vehicle and headed to the Checkers on Lake Bradford Road. Once there, part of the group went into the Checkers, leaving the mother, 3-year-old child, and Ashley Hunter in the car. Another vehicle carrying three people, including Ashley's boyfriend "Trell", or "Terrell", pulled up next to the vehicle.

"Trell" then got out of the vehicle and put a black bag and a white t-shirt, which appeared to have been wrapped around something, into her backseat. She said that "Trell" then went into the Checkers. The mother says she was texting when she heard a gunshot. She then exited the vehicle to see where the noise came from. After looking into her backseat, she saw the child laying on the floorboard with blood all around him. Her sister said she saw the handgun laying on the ground at that point.

"Trell" was identified as Rontrail D. Spencer. Spencer turned himself after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was transported to the Leon County Jail.

Spencer is charged with child abuse with a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm.

According to Tallahassee Police spokesperson David Northway, the 3 year old boy was shot inside a silver Chevy Impala.

It happened in the parking lot of the restaurant at Stadium Drive and Jackson Bluff Road, across the street from Doak Campbell Stadium.

Northway says they received a 911 call at 4:52 pm Monday.

According to Checkers employee, Danny Johnson, the mother of the boy came inside the restaurant, telling Johnson that ‘her son shot himself.’

Police can’t confirm those details.

The 3 year old boy was taken to a local hospital, where he is undergoing surgery for serious injuries.

Police aren’t releasing any more details, but say the investigation is ongoing.
