TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Thirty-four men have been arrested for using a computer to solicit sex with a minor in our area.
Tallahassee Police announced the arrests Tuesday, after conducting a seven day sting in the Capital City.
"This investigation has revealed a disturbing number of individuals who've been actively targeting children in this community," said Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell.
The men arrested range in ages 18 to 55.
During a week of stings that ended on Sunday, Tallahassee Police led the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children task force in catching the accused sex predators.
“These people are using forums, that are already online, that are being used on a daily basis,” said Sgt. Lawrence Revell with the Tallahassee Police Dept., “and we go into those forums as well, and try to make contact with people we believe are making contact with children.”
Undercover investigators, disguising themselves as 11 to 14 year old children on online forums, lured the suspects to a home in Northeast Tallahassee. The alleged predators thought they were going to have sex, instead they were arrested.
Most of those arrested were from our area, but some traveled from as far away as Dothan, Alabama.
“We did have one that traveled on a bicycle,” said Sgt. Revell, “you get people from all walks of life.”
Those arrested included an attorney, a FSU teaching assistant and a state corrections officer.
We’re told both the teaching assistant and the corrections officer have been relieved of their duties.
“Monitoring what your children do online is not being nosy or sneaky,” said Sheriff Campbell, “it's being mom or dad, aunt or uncle, brother or sister, or maybe even grandma or grandpa.”
Charges vary, but traveling to have sex with a minor carries a 15 year maximum penalty.
Online solicitation of a minor can send someone behind bars for a max of five years.
At least one of the suspects is an illegal immigrant. He could be deported back to Turkey.
