TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- Runners laced up their sneakers to prepare for a Tallahassee tradition, the Annual Firecracker 5k and Fun Run.

The Capital City Kiwanis Club hosted the fundraiser, which is in its 33rd year. The race raises money to support the club's mission of commuinty service, including its dedcication to the Southern Scholarship Foundation, Miracle Sports, and the Big Bend Hospice.

For the first time, the Honor Guard of Local Veterans led the race in place of a grand marshal. One veteran explained what the race means to him.

Bryce Thornton said, "It's just a thank you to me as far as Fourth of July. A thank you to the veterans. Not only are veterans of WWII but all the veterans. I think it means that at least the country is thinking about the people who made them safe. If it wasn't for the kids out there today we wouldn't be safe either. it means a lot."
