ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia prison inmate has been sentenced to serve more than 12 years in federal prison for laundering money from a scam operated by inmates using contraband cellphones.

U.S. Attorney John Horn said in a news release Monday that 36-year-old Reginald Perkins of Atlanta has been sentenced to serve 12 years and seven months for laundering $1 million. He pleaded guilty in March.

Perkins was an inmate at Jimmy Autry State Prison in Pelham. Inmates used internet access on contraband cellphones to identify potential fraud victims.

Horn said the inmates posed as law enforcement and called victims to say they'd missed jury duty and that they had to pay a fine or be arrested. They then got the victims to wire them money or put money on prepaid cash cards.
