GA (WTXL)--A local river lands on the endangered list. ABC 27's Rebecca Baer has more on why environmentalists say its future depends on state lawmakers.
From the Atlanta area all the way to Lake Seminole the Flint River provides miles of boating and fishing for Georgia residents. But according to American Rivers its one of the most endangered waterways in the nation. Local scientists are not surprised.
"Our region's growing, a lot of rural sprawl, more pavement, changes in hydrology," said Woody Hicks, hydrologist.
But Woody Hicks, a hydrologist, and member of the Flint River keepers, says it's more than development. He says proposals by state lawmakers to build two dams, an effort to address the state's water needs, could cause damage to the Flint.
Many boaters on the flint say they're surprised, the river they love, you can get out on a boat, get out in the water, just enjoy it, could be in trouble.
"Does that concern you? Oh, yes, it would change our way of life and everything south of the dam," said Scott Robertson, Thomasville.
It would also change one of the flint's biggest honors. It's one of the few rivers to flow unimpeded for two hundred miles.
